Brief Introduction

The banking sub-sector of the financial sector of any nation can be described as the driving engine of the nation’s economy to the extent that if the banking industry fails, the economy fails, and vice versa.

Thus, the performance of banks goes a long way in determining the intermediation process of the economy (Ojo, 1994) (cited in Olalere and Adenugba, 2013). This performance can be measured in terms of earnings per share, profitability index, returns on equity (ROE), etc.

The relevance of the banks‟ performance in the economic status of a nation provides the reason why the Nigerian government has always placed a great emphasis on improving the effectiveness of this industry over the years.

The integration of the world economies into a global village in the face of ever-increasing ICT coupled with the challenges posed by the depressed economy and the increased competition from other nations‟ banks necessitated the need for a more productive human capital.
