Brief Introduction

After a period of relative neglect, the small business sector is recognized today as a key element in national economic growth (stokes and Wilson, (2006:3) comparisons of the profiles of the business population in developed countries indicate a clear and continuing trend towards a larger number of smaller firms with a corresponding reduction in the numbers of larger companies.

Guided by politicians and management theorists, public perceptions of small businesses have shifted in recent times from the extremes of neglect and ignorance to the hype and over-expectation Curran and Blackburn, (1994:27). In the 1950s and 1960s, small firms were written off as out-of-date forms of economic activity.

By the late 1970s and 1980s, they were hailed as the new saviours of ailing western economics and by the 1990s, small businesses were recognized as the key to fuller employment. In the current decade, new ventures and small businesses have become synonymous with economic success Williams, (1982:36).

The revival of self-employment and small business ownership in developed countries coincided with a period of recession and high levels of unemployment from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s.
